How Far Apart Are the Planets?

Have you ever wondered how far apart the planets in our solar system are? The distances are so huge that it’s hard to imagine! But what if we used something familiar, like a football field, to help us understand? Let’s pretend the Sun is sitting on one goal line of a football field, and we’ll see where each planet would be along the field.

The Inner Planets – Close to the Sun

The first four planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are called the inner planets because they are the closest to the Sun. Even though they seem close in space, there’s still a lot of room between them!

  • Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. If the Sun were on the goal line, Mercury would be about 10 yards down the field. That’s like a quick first down in football!
  • Venus is the next planet. It would be about 18 yards from the Sun—still pretty close!
  • Earth, our home, is about 25 yards away from the Sun. That’s about one-fourth of the field!
  • Mars, the red planet, is 38 yards from the Sun. If you started at the goal line and ran to Mars, you’d have made it more than a third of the way across the field!

The Outer Planets – Much Farther Away

The outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—are much farther from the Sun than the inner planets. This is where the distances really start to stretch!

  • Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system, is about 130 yards away. Wait a minute! That’s beyond the 100-yard football field! You’d have to run out of the end zone and keep going!
  • Saturn, famous for its rings, is even farther at 240 yards. That’s more than two full football fields!
  • Uranus would be 500 yards away—that’s five football fields in a row!
  • Neptune, the farthest planet from the Sun, is a whopping 780 yards away. That’s almost eight football fields long! Imagine running that far just to reach Neptune!

What About Pluto?

Pluto is no longer considered a planet, but if we included it, it would be about 1,000 yards from the Sun—that’s 10 football fields away!

The Solar System is BIG!

Even when we shrink the whole solar system down to a football field, the outer planets are still way, way out there. In real life, the planets are millions or even billions of miles apart. That’s why space travel takes so long!

Next time you’re watching a football game, picture the Sun at one end and imagine Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars close together, while Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are spread out over many fields. The solar system is huge, but now you have a way to picture just how big it really is!
